Award Background
The Value in Health Regional Issues Paper of the Year Award was established in 2014 to recognize the best article published in Value in Health Regional Issues. The objective of this award is to promote quality research, originality, and utility in healthcare decisions for articles published in Value in Health Regional Issues.
Criteria:
The award is given to the best article published in Value in Health Regional Issues annually. The recognized article will represent a major contribution to the field of health economics and outcomes research [including clinical, economic, and patient-reported (health-related quality of life) outcomes] or its use in healthcare decision making including original research, development of new methods, health policy analysis, and reviews. Articles such as editorials, commentaries, and letters are excluded from consideration for this award.
Selection Process:
Value in Health Regional Issues Co-Editors will nominate 2-3 best articles from the articles that he/she has handled in the two most recently published issues of their region and will generate a list of nominated articles. The Editor-in-Chief of each region will then select the best article from the list. The nominee is then forwarded to the ISPOR Board of Directors for approval. If the article has also been selected as a recipient of an ISPOR Research Excellence Award, and if the Awards Committee feels that this should be avoided, the Value in Health Regional Issues Editor-in-Chief of the region can be instructed to consult the Chairs of the ISPOR Research Excellence Awards Committee before confirming the selection. The corresponding author on the best article is given the Value in Health Regional Issues Excellent Article Award.
Nature of Award:
The recipient will receive the award at the Awards Ceremony at the ISPOR Conference. The recipient will receive the following:
- A complimentary registration to the ISPOR Conference
- Travel and Accommodation expenses to the ISPOR Conference, per the ISPOR Travel Reimbursement policy

Dr Syed Shahzad HASAN joined the University of Huddersfield in Sep 2017 and is currently working as a Senior Research Fellow in Pharmacy. He also holds a conjoint Senior Lecturer position at the University of Newcastle, Australia. Dr Hasan has taught a range of clinical pharmacy practice-related topics at universities in Malaysia (2007–2011 & 2015–2017), Australia (2012–2014 & 2018–to date), and the UK (2017–to date) and draws on experience as a pharmacist and researcher. His research focuses on pharmacoepidemiology, quality use of medicines, pharmaceutical policy and practice, medication safety & reviews, and evidence synthesis. Dr Hasan won a competitive, merit-based International Postgraduate Research Scholarship to complete a Doctor of Philosophy degree at the University of Queensland, Australia. Dr Hasan has published numerous research articles in leading health sciences journals, supervised many research students, and actively participates in the peer review process for several scientific journals.

Alexandra Beletsi, PharmD, PhD, has more than 15 years of commercial experience in pharmaceutical industry, with 10 years in the management team as Head of the Market Access Department and the last 3 years as the Head of the Medical Affairs Department in the Les Laboratoires Servier affiliate in Greece. In 1999, she received an MSc Degree in Industrial Pharmaceutics and in 2001 her PhD in Pharmaceutical Technology from University of Patras, Department of Pharmacy, Greece, having a Scholarship of the National Scholarship Foundation (IKY). In 2016, she received an MSc degree in Health Services Management, with a Direction of Economic Evaluation, from the National School of Public Health (ESDY), in Greece. Dr Beletsi’s main research interests include comparative health policy and healthcare reforms, and pharmaceutical economics, focusing in the pricing and reimbursement of medicines.

José Miguel Uribe-Restrepo, MD, MPH, is an Associate Professor and Director of the Department of Psychiatry and Mental Health at Javeriana University Medical School and member of the Fundación Santa Fe de Bogotá. From 2004 to 2009, he was the Medical Director of the Clinica La Inmaculada in Bogotá, and during the last 25 years has practiced clinical psychiatry and psychotherapy both in private and public settings. Since 2006, he has been part of the GESESM group, an interdisciplinary collaboration for economic and social studies in mental health at Javeriana University. In 2013, he received his Master of Public Health at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. During the last 5 years, he has been part of collaborative research projects in Global Mental Health focusing on Colombia and is an expert consultant at Dartmouth College for the Scaling Up Science-based Mental Health Interventions for the Latin America implementation research project.

Beside his role in CEEOR Ales Tichopad was active in academia, lecturing at Technical University Munich, Czech Technical University Prague and Czech Academy of Science. Fei-Li Zhao, PhD, is a health economist with experiences gained from working in both academia and industry. Her research capacity and interests lie in economic evaluation using trial and real-world data, quality of life research and preference measurement, and health services research in Asia Pacific countries. Dr Zhao regularly undertakes research on behalf of the government and non-government agencies. This includes providing high quality, expert health technology assessment advice and support to the Pharmaceutical Benefits Advisory Committee (PBAC) for national reimbursement decision makings of pharmaceuticals and vaccines in Australia. She has presented nationally and internationally on her research and published series of papers on high-profile journals such as Value in Health, Pharmacoeconomics, PLOS One, Medical Care, Health Quality of Life Outcomes and BMC pregnancy and childbirth.

Dr Andrade is an Associate Professor at the Economics Department at the Federal University of Minas Gerais, Belo Horizonte, Brazil. Dr Andrade works with applied microeconomics, specifically with health economics and evaluation of social programs. She received her PhD in Economics at the Graduate School of Getulio Vargas Foundation (1996 to 2000), Rio de Janeiro, and won the Award of best PhD dissertation, provided by the Associação Nacional de pós-Graduação em Economia, Haralambus Simonidis in 2000. In 2008-2009, she spent one year as a visiting researcher at Pompeu Fabra University, Center for Health Economics. At the Federal University of Minas Gerais, Monica is the leader of Health Economics Research Group, Grupo de Estudos em Economia da Saude e Criminalidade. The research group has carried out important investigations, including the estimation of social preferences for EQ-5D health states for Brazil. Monica was also the Dean of the Graduate Program of Economics during the period of 2003-2008. Monica is currently spending one year as a Takemi Fellow at Harvard School of Public Health, Global Health and Population Department. Monica is also a Researcher 1D of the National Council of Research (CNPQ) in Brazil and Member of the Committee (Economics) of the National Council of Research in Brazil.

Rok Hren, PhD, has more than 15 years of commercial experience in pharmaceutical industry, with more than 10 years on a board level in both line management, which has included full P&L responsibility for operations in Slovenia and Romania, and regional leadership functions in Central and Eastern Europe. He regularly presents on the topic of pharmaceutical economics and policies at conferences in Europe and is well experienced in health care media business. Currently, he holds the position of a Managing Director of Carso, a Member of Salus Group PLC (SALR.SI). He received his PhD in Physiology and Biophysics from Dalhousie University, Canada and MSc in International Health Policy (Health Economics) with distinction from London School of Economics and Political Science, UK. He is also an Assistant Professor at the University of Ljubljana and a President of ISPOR Slovenia Regional Chapter. In total, his publications gathered 240/341citations (excluding self-citations) in WoS/Scopus (as of September 16, 2015).
